{"id":930,"date":"2017-04-25T12:23:58","date_gmt":"2017-04-25T12:23:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.sunderland.ac.uk\/seagullcity\/?page_id=930"},"modified":"2022-01-31T15:35:50","modified_gmt":"2022-01-31T15:35:50","slug":"margaret-drysburgh","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.sunderland.ac.uk\/seagullcity\/margaret-drysburgh\/","title":{"rendered":"Margaret Dryburgh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Margaret Dryburgh (1890-1945) was born in Nelson Street, Monkwearmouth.\u00a0 Her father, William Dryburgh, was a Presbyterian minister.\u00a0 The family moved briefly to Gateshead but returned to Sunderland in 1906 when William became minister of St Stephen\u2019s church on Stockton Road.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Margaret trained as a teacher and, in 1917, became a Christian missionary.\u00a0 Her first posting was to China in 1919, then to Singapore where in 1934 she was appointed head of Choon Goan School.\u00a0 This is where she was living when the Second World War broke out.\u00a0 When Singapore fell in 1942, Margaret was captured with the other missionaries and taken to an internment camp at Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During her time at the camp, she was very active in setting up activities for her fellow captives, such as forming a short story club and producing a camp magazine.\u00a0 She also joined forces with Norah Chambers, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, to form a camp choir.\u00a0 She composed <em>The Captives&#8217; Hymn<\/em>, which was sung every Sunday during the improvised church services.\u00a0 Such events were vital in maintaining moral in conditions where disease and malnutrition were rife.\u00a0 Towards the end of the Second World War, along with other inmates, Margaret was transferred to Loebok Lingau camp, a journey which took its toll on her health.\u00a0 She died on 21<sup>st<\/sup> April 1945 from dysentery.\u00a0 Her remains were finally buried in the Dutch War Grave Cemetery in Java.<\/p>\n<p>Dryburgh\u2019s music, particularly the <em>Captives&#8217; Hymn<\/em>, continues to be performed by women\u2019s choirs.\u00a0 Her life has been most famously recorded on film in the 1996 film <em>Paradise Road<\/em>, although in that film her name was changed to Margaret Drummond.\u00a0 You can read the lyrics to <em>The Captives&#8217; Hymn<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.sunderland.ac.uk\/seagullcity\/the-captives-hymn\/\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 The hymn is most often sung by all-female choirs, a capella.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Margaret Dryburgh (1890-1945) was born in Nelson Street, Monkwearmouth.\u00a0 Her father, William Dryburgh, was a Presbyterian minister.\u00a0 The family moved briefly to Gateshead but returned to Sunderland in 1906 when William became minister of St Stephen\u2019s church on Stockton Road. &nbsp; Margaret trained as a teacher and, in 1917, became a Christian missionary.\u00a0 Her first [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":11,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-930","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/wp.sunderland.ac.uk\/seagullcity\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/930","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/wp.sunderland.ac.uk\/seagullcity\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/wp.sunderland.ac.uk\/seagullcity\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wp.sunderland.ac.uk\/seagullcity\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/11"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wp.sunderland.ac.uk\/seagullcity\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=930"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"https:\/\/wp.sunderland.ac.uk\/seagullcity\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/930\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1525,"href":"https:\/\/wp.sunderland.ac.uk\/seagullcity\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/930\/revisions\/1525"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/wp.sunderland.ac.uk\/seagullcity\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=930"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
