{"id":712,"date":"2016-10-10T15:06:48","date_gmt":"2016-10-10T15:06:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.sunderland.ac.uk\/seagullcity\/?page_id=712"},"modified":"2016-10-10T15:06:48","modified_gmt":"2016-10-10T15:06:48","slug":"the-storm","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.sunderland.ac.uk\/seagullcity\/the-storm\/","title":{"rendered":"The Storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sir Cuthbert Sharp, \u2018The Storm\u2019 from <em>Poems on a Variety of Subjects<\/em> (Sunderland, 1828), pp. 16-18.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cold blew the wind from off the sea,<\/p>\n<p>As I walk\u2019d on the moor;<\/p>\n<p>The ships were driving to the lee,<\/p>\n<p>And clouds began to lour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The eastern sky was all o\u2019ercast,<\/p>\n<p>And troubl\u2019d seem\u2019d the air;<\/p>\n<p>And sea-fowl, conscious of the blast,<\/p>\n<p>To shelving rocks repair.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The sun was glim\u2019ring through the sky,<\/p>\n<p>In robes of mist array\u2019d;<\/p>\n<p>I thought a storm was surely nigh,<\/p>\n<p>As on the moor I stray\u2019d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Scarce had I rov\u2019d its banks an hour,<\/p>\n<p>When waves began to roar;<\/p>\n<p>And rain in torrents fast did pour<\/p>\n<p>Upon the affrighted shore.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When night her gloom had gather\u2019d round,<\/p>\n<p>No star beam\u2019d on the deep;<\/p>\n<p>The east wind sigh\u2019d a doleful sound\u2014<\/p>\n<p>The world was hush\u2019d in sleep.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A ship, not distant from the beach,<\/p>\n<p>Was soon with billows tost,<\/p>\n<p>And striving hard the piers to reach,<\/p>\n<p>Was wreck\u2019d upon the coast.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But, ah!
