The Formula Student competition was created by the IMechE as a way to make engineering a more exciting prospect for new students. The competition was designed to allow engineering students to put what they are learning in the lecture theatre to practical use and develop their hands on skills, giving them more confidence and a head start once they have graduated and looking to work in the engineering industry.
Teams are challenged to design, build and compete in a single seat race car within a year and on a limited budget. Teams compete on the track and in the board room. The dynamic events are a series of handling and speed challenges, while in the static events students must give presentations to judges on the design, build, budgeting and marketing of each car as if they were to be sold to amateur weekend racers for autocross and sprint races.
The competition not only develops their engineering skills, but also their skills in management, teamwork, budgeting and working to deadlines, all invaluable experience for working in the real world.
This year teams will be coming from across the world to compete at Silverstone, the home of British motor sport, only a few days after the British F1 Grand Prix.
